Meconopsis speciosa

Photographer : David Rankin

Taxonomy

( M. horridula relative ) A deciduous monocarpic from SE Tibet and Yunnan, reputedly the only scented Meconopsis. The flowers may be on scapes and racemes but most obviously the latter. It usually has pale blue flowers with distinct dissected leaves not unlike the related M. aculeata but comes from a completely different part of the Himalayas. It is a dwarf plant of screes but height is variable. The Yunnan form is described as having large flowers, dark anthers and shiny leaves.

Cultivation

Is a difficult species to grow on and germination of seed is often poor. Wild seed is occasionally offered. Seedlings are slow growing and it would take several years to flower. Dry spells and fungal infections are both detrimental to seedlings. Cool northern climates (Norway?) offer the greatest hope.
